About Sgt John A Lyons


john-lyons-6568036Army Sgt. John A. Lyons was born in Peterborough, N.H., and resided in  Seaside Park, N.J.  John was a 2003 graduate of Central Regional High School in Berkeley. He then attended Rutgers University and graduated with degrees in political science and Latin in 2008 and then was assigned to 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.


John was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Overseas, Army Service and National Defense Ribbons and the Global War on Terrorism, for which he received Service and Expeditionary Medals. Lyons also led the winning team of the annual Bataan Death March Event in New Mexico.


On October 26, 2011 while serving During Operation Enduring Freedom in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, John died of wounds caused by enemy small-arms fire.


John’s mother, Susan Smiley, resides in Seaside Park. His older brother Adam and his wife Meredith Lyons live in New Hampshire. They have two sons whom John adored. John's sister, Lena Lyons, lives in Virginia. His grandmother, Gloria Smiley, Aunt Beth Merle, Uncle Tony Merle, and their three children live in Northern Jersey. His fiancé, Kristiani Endreson grew up in Florida. Many of them will be in attendance at will truly be an emotional event. John was due home about a month after he was killed. He was planning to help his brother with his business in New Hampshire.
